The San Diego County Water Authority this week started distributing 25,000 cloth facemasks to water and wastewater agency employees in six Southern California counties as part of the national effort to ensure essential workers have enough protective gear during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The masks are available to public and private water and wastewater utilities in Mono, Inyo, San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego and Imperial counties. Water Authority staff created a drive-through operation to maintain physical distancing while handing out the facemasks.

Water Industry Partners with San Diego Food Bank to Fight Hunger

In addition to ensuring a safe and reliable water supply, the Board leadership of the San Diego County Water Authority is joining with water agencies across the region to fight the economic impacts of the pandemic through a virtual food drive in partnership with the San Diego Food Bank.

The San Diego Food Bank helps feed hundreds of thousands of hungry people each year – and the numbers are growing rapidly as economic impacts of coronavirus closures ripple across the region.

Water Authority Offices Closed to Public

Starting Monday, March 16, the San Diego County Water Authority is closing its Kearny Mesa and Escondido facilities to the public as part of the nationwide effort to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Like other public agencies across the region, the Water Authority is taking several precautionary steps to protect employees and minimize opportunities for virus transmission. Those steps include cancelling non-essential meetings, holding critical meetings electronically, and minimizing travel.

Board of Directors approves contract after nationwide search, starts new era

The San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today approved a contract with Sandra L. Kerl to be the new general manager of the region’s wholesale water agency, following a months-long national search. The Board approved the contract in open session during its regular monthly meeting at Water Authority headquarters.

A malfunction at the Twin Oaks Valley Water Treatment Plant resulted in a citation from the state Division of Drinking Water, though the water in regional pipelines continued to be safe for all uses due to additional treatment processes that are in place.

The San Diego County Water Authority’s Board of Directors today adopted a $1.7 billion budget for fiscal years 2020 and 2021. The new budget is up 5 percent from the current two-year budget, due largely to increasing costs for water supply, supply reliability and infrastructure improvements.
